My wife and I are childless professionals. I admit that we have more money than we need and we buy a lot of stupid stuff. Basically, if you put Deadpool on something, my wife will buy it. For my part, I will probably not stop hemorrhaging cash until every light bulb in my house can be remote controlled to change into arbitrary colors.
Most importantly, we buy most of this stuff — plus actual important household stuff — from Amazon. In January, we spent $950. That’s actually an unusually high monthly spending total, but I wanted to illustrate the amounts.
Amazon, being a company that loves “big data,” they know I’ve been a customer for nearly 20 years and have spent a small fortune with them over that time. Here’s what I sent:
As the original account holder of this account I now share with my spouse, I like to highlight a change.
Our net order total for March will be $0. We have cancelled all pre-orders. During this month we will be evaluating options for ending our Prime membership and replacing our Echo, Fire, and Kindle devices.
While I usually appreciate a company providing me with a wide variety of choices and content, I have to draw a line at NRATV. This is a propaganda outlet for an organization that does no good, only harm. Would you carry "White Power TV"? Would you carry "NAMBLA TV"? No. Whatever your commitment to intellectual freedom, there are world views that have only negative consequences. At this point in history, NRATV is an outlet for one of those world views.
We'll see where we are in April, and perhaps it will be time for me to find other vendors for future purchases.
The response was encouraging, although it smacked of boilerplate. The gist is that they are probably(?) going to drop NRATV and are working on how to do this. I understand. It’s a bit of a PR minefield and there may be contractual and policy issues at play. If they do not faithfully and fairly apply acceptable use policies, for example, they could be sued. Sued successfully? I don’t know, but a law suit from a powerful organization is still a hassle.
As I said, we’ll see where they are in a month. I really don’t want to part ways with Amazon, but i wasn’t kidding, and losing customers like me will hurt them. A lot.
